What is a CSA?

Unlock the Delicious World of Community Supported Agriculture

If you like to eat and shop locally, you know it can be difficult to find a good, consistent farm fresh source. And when you find a source, then you have to coordinate trips out to a farm or make sure you have free time every Saturday morning for the farmers market.

But you don’t want to default to supermarket food! It travels hundreds (or thousands) of miles to get to you. On that long trip, produce loses many of its nutrients, getting less fresh with every mile.

Plus, you want to keep your money in the local economy and support local businesses.

That’s what a CSA is all about!

What is a CSA?

CSA = Community Supported Agriculture

Imagine having your very own farmer, someone who nurtures the land and grows a variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and even herbs just for you.

That's what a CSA is all about.

It's a partnership between consumers and local farmers, where individuals or families become members of a farm, investing in the farm and sharing in the bounty it produces.

The beauty of a CSA lies in the direct connection it establishes between farmers and consumers. By joining a CSA, you not only support local agriculture but also get to know the people growing your food!

How Does a CSA Work?

Most CSA begin at the start of the spring or summer growing season. You sign up as a member and pay a fee, which helps cover the farm's operating costs. In return, you receive a weekly or biweekly share of the farm's harvest!

Some CSA also have fall and winter shares and some provide non-produce products year round!

Fresh Food

The contents of each share varies depending on what's in season. This ensures you’ll get the freshest and most flavorful produce possible.

From juicy tomatoes and crisp lettuce to vibrant carrots and succulent berries!

Plus, you’ll get some fun, unique produce that isn’t available in grocery stores so you can embark on a culinary adventure, trying new dishes and experiencing new flavors.

But it doesn't stop at just vegetables. Many CSAs offer add-ons like eggs, honey, artisanal bread, and even edible or decorative flowers. Some farmers raise animals and provide mixed meat CSA shares all year, so you can get regular boxes of chicken, beef, pork, lamb, etc.

Convenience

One of the best parts of a CSA?

The convenience!

Boxes are either delivered straight to your doorstep or available for pickup at a central location, depending on the farm.

This means you can make fewer trips to the grocery store and avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot during a busy farmers market.

Support Local

A CSA is more than just a transactional arrangement; it's the fruition of local food values.

By participating in a CSA, you actively engage in sustainable farming practices, reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional ag, support the preservation of local ecosystems, and support families in your community.

Community

And just when you thought it couldn’t get better… some CSAs provide educational opportunities for members just as organized farm visits, workshops, or cooking classes.

These experiences offer a glimpse into the intricate workings of a farm, teaching us about the challenges faced by farmers and the importance of seasonal eating.
